A European consortium of twenty organisations
The Streetforum Project brings together university research centres, non-profit organisations, public institutions and private organisations from Austria, Belgium, Sweden and Turkey. The project is coordinated by the Mobilise Mobility and Logistics Research Group of the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB).

Research organisation
The Mobilise Mobility and Logistics Research Group at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB) has a track record in socio-economic evaluations for urban mobility & logistics and supporting participatory transport planning. The team has developed tools for decision-makers in the private and public sectors to analyse the environmental, economic and social impact of new concepts involving stakeholders in the decision process. VUB Mobilise has significant experience in working with urban stakeholders on topics such as policy impact analysis, participatory planning methods, equity assessment and inclusion. They developed the multi-actor multi-criteria analysis (MAMCA) and Stakeholder Impact Scoring (SIS) methods to appraise projects with stakeholders.
Cultureghem

Cultureghem is a non-profit organisation based in Anderlecht, Brussels. It was started in September 2012 with Cultivating Urban Space as its tagline actively sharing space with anyone who wants it. They organised the mobile kitchens of KOOKMET, the playground of KETMET and the vegetables of COLLECTMET to bring people together in public space. They have an arsenal of mobile tools to turn (semi)-public spaces into meeting places as well as an army of volunteers (DREAMTEAM) that continues to grow day after day and is an example of the wonderful diversity that makes Brussels so attractive.

Anderlecht is one of the 19 municipalities that together form the Brussels-Capital Region. With 120,887 inhabitants, it is the third largest municipality in the Region in terms of number of inhabitants, as well as the third largest in geographical size. Anderlecht has a highly diverse territorial structure, ranging from densely populated inner-city districts to commercial districts in the historic centre, to residential and rural areas in several “garden cities”, to rural Neerpede. Its population is equally diverse, with 31% of inhabitants being of a foreign nationality, and in some parts of the municipality there is a high proportion of vulnerable-to-exclusion residents including people with low income, migration background, low level of education and elderly.

BOUN-ITS Lab is one of the most experienced labs in Turkey’s operating mobility and smart transportation systems, both commercially and academically. The lab is part of Bogazici University, a leading state university in Turkey; with a 159-year history and a strong tradition of international collaborations. Being a research university, the university holds 32 research centres and 159 research labs working on unique research topics. Bogazici University encourages research life in all current and prioritized topics related to all academic fields in a multi- and inter-disciplinary manner, in cooperation with diverse sectors and international actors, placing a high emphasis on social and basic sciences. Among various research areas, 3 priority research areas are Lifesciences, ICT and Economics.

Istanbul is the most populated city in Turkey with a population of around 17 million. Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IMM) holds a fundamental role in the local administration of Istanbul, encompassing the entire provincial territory. It is responsible for a wide variety of areas including environment, natural-gas supply, energy, infrastructure, planning and development, IT, transportation, community services and vocational education, health-wellness, food and catering, culture and tourism.

Spacescape is a Swedish city planning consulting firm. The company started as a research group at the School of Architecture KTH in Stockholm, focusing on spatial analysis. We use research-based measures and tools to analyse the shape and urban form, from places and districts to entire regions. We have worked on several urban and street design projects in the Nordics and have done extensive research and innovation. Our broad competence in urban design includes placemaking, green planning, social sustainability, real estate development and traffic planning. During the past years, the temporary street redesign has become central to Spacescape.
Municipality of Stockholm

Stockholm is the capital and largest city of Sweden. Approximately 980,000 people live in the municipality. In order to increase liveability the city has recently engaged in many projects aiming to transform public space, reduce car use and improve safety. The municipality of Stockholm will be represented in the project by the Department of Transportation – Trafikkontoret. The Trafikkontoret is responsible for ensuring that the public spaces are safe and attractive with efficient transport solutions and good accessibility in the increasingly dense city.

Konstfrämjandet, People’s Movements for Art Promotion, work towards the mission “art for everyone”. Konstfrämjandet see art as a way of rethinking society and ourselves. Together with artists, participants and member organizations, they provide different perspectives on the time in which we live. Konstfrämjandet can be found around the country and through their various member organizations and districts. The divergent districts are united in a strong artistic and social interest. Members are various social movements, such as educational associations and worker’s unions, and other popular movements.

The Artifact-based Computing & User Research (ACUR) Unit at the TU Wien (TUW) is active in applied research, consulting, and teaching in the field of computer science and user-centred technology co-design and evaluation, focusing on socio-technological aspects of design, empowerment of users, and innovative interactions to increase user experience in design. The Research Unit is skilled in evaluating mobility services and developing strategies to meet the needs of diverse target groups. Design of multimodal innovative interfaces in a human-centred participatory approach is the main research focus of ACUR. Experiences from several previous projects ended up in a framework and toolkit called “Multidisciplinary Design Thinking”.

Space and place is a cultural and research organisation that creates social spaces in underrated and underestimated urban places, bringing public space to life. In doing so, the culture and research initiative often concentrates on seemingly insignificant, unrecognised places. Since 2018 the organisation focussed on residential streets (Wohnstraßen / Woonerven), aiming at creating places of well-being and climate oasis in an urban setting. By means of art interventions, anthropological research in the city, socio-cultural projects, gaming and creative appropriation space and place creates social spaces and get people from various backgrounds to start a conversation with one another.
Alain Tisserand architect

Alain Tisserand is an architect living and working in Vienna. Interested in interventions and design of public spaces, he has planned and executed several (art) projects in squares and streets around the city. Alain Tisserand is interested in providing simple solutions to activate public spaces, that can easily be reproduced. At the same time, he is testing and pushing the boundary of what is possible in the urban sphere with his installations.

The Mobility Agency Vienna was founded in 2013 to promote cycling and walking, with campaigns, awareness raising, services and innovative projects. As an intermediary between citizens, the administration and politicians, the Agency works to make walking and cycling in the city more accessible, comfortable and safer.

The district of Mariahilf is Vienna’s 6th district. It is a densely populated area with many residential buildings and shops. The district has a population of approximately 31.000 people and is only 1,4 km2 big, which makes it one of the smallest districts of Vienna. Mariahilf is home to people from all walks of life and one of the most diverse neighborhoods of Vienna.

The Bezirksvorstehung (District Parliament) is a local decision-making body, mainly responsible for design and redesign of urban public space (streets, markets, parks, play grounds, …), social infrastructure and cultural activities. Furthermore, the involvement of citizens in the neighbourhoods is an important task for all the members of the district parliament.

The aspern.mobil LAB creates a space for innovation in the aspern Seestadt, where science, administration and companies, together with residents, contribute to the development of sustainable urban mobility. It aims to establish and support a new culture of mobility and innovation in this extraordinary development area. Lakeside townspeople, local stakeholders, politicians and actors from research, development and business think, develop and act here on an equal footing. Innovative mobility solutions focus on active mobility, shared mobility as a service, first/last mile logistics and the investigation of their spatial, economic, ecological and social benefit.

The postgraduate master program “Cooperative urban and regional development” is affiliated at the Postgraduate Center, University of Vienna. It tackles the topic and contested fields of cooperative urban and regional development with the aim of linking science and practice. The focus is on the dynamics of spatial developments and the increasingly complex issues and challenges, as these require greater cooperation between different actors with diverse competencies and institutional anchoring.

Geht-doch.wien is a citizen association that works to improve urban open space for pedestrians which means putting human needs in the centre of its work. It collaborates with citizens and governance bodies alike. Oftentimes it chooses to do interventions in public space to highlight issues like unfair distribution of street space, the importance of consumption-free seating and improving the safety and life quality of all people walking in the city. Its work is located in the placemaking realm. The focus of geht-doch.wien is Viennese urban area.

Weatherpark GmbH is a SME and Austria’s leading commercial consulting company for urban climatology and wind research, with consultations in the fields of wind comfort, human comfort and microclimate. Weatherpark GmbH is Vienna-based and was founded in 2005. Their team of 7 urban experts do some 50 projects a year concerning wind, heat, measurements and computational models. Their customers are real estate developers and cities. They also take part in research projects so that they can contribute to new findings.

The Carfree Cities Alliance (CCA) is an international network of individuals and organizations calling for sustainable practices focused on improving the urban environment and people’s lives rather than on the mobility of motorized vehicles. CCA takes the position that forging truly liveable cities requires immediate shifts away from unsustainable lifestyles, especially the automobile culture. CCA advocates for a comprehensive transition towards use of non-motorized transport and reallocation of car-dominated spaces to lively civic areas and pedestrian amenities that cater to making people welcome and safe. CCA has developed an innovative approach and structure for implementing transformational projects in cities by showcasing the possibility of sustainable, resilient cities and communities. CCA has launched an international campaign and is working with its allies in over 10 countries throughout the world, to deliver a local framework for initiating transformational projects.
